Common causes of truck accidents: There are many risks out there

Commercial trucks are everywhere. From the highway to the city streets, there is no way to avoid these vehicles when you take to the road.

Even if you're used to sharing the road with large trucks, it's important to remember this: Truckers don't always take a high level of caution when driving, which increases the likelihood of an accident.

As the driver of a passenger vehicle, it's important to understand the most common causes of car-truck accidents. With this knowledge in mind, it's much easier to avoid an accident.

  • Drowsy driving: There are laws in place to protect against this, but some truckers feel compelled to stay on the road too long with the idea of making better time.
  • Reckless driving: Excessive speeding, for example, is considered reckless. Truckers often drive recklessly, even if they don't have the intention of doing so.
  • Distracted driving: Truck drivers can become distracted just as easily as anyone else. They take their eyes off the road to answer a text, read a map or adjust a vehicle control. When doing so, the risk of an accident increases.
  • Inadequate training: Trucking companies have the responsibility to provide drivers with the proper training. Neglecting to do so for any reason, such as time or money, puts everyone on the road in a dangerous spot.
  • Driving under the influence: Alcohol, drugs and prescription medication can alter a person's ability to make sound decisions. When driving, this is a big problem.

These types of things can cause a car-truck accident, but you're unable to control any of them. Instead, you simply hope that every trucker on the road is doing what they should.

Fortunately, there are things you can do to enhance your safety:

  • Make yourself visible to truckers by avoiding blind spots
  • Use your turn signal when changing lanes
  • Take caution when merging onto the highway
  • Leave a safe following distance
  • Don't drive between two commercial trucks

No matter how hard you try, you could still be part of a car-truck accident. A trucker could make a mistake, such as texting and driving, which causes a massive crash.

If this happens, call for immediate help and focus your attention on your health and recovery. As time allows, contact your insurance company, dive into the details of the accident and take steps to protect your legal rights.
